Loan vs Lease

Buying builds equity; leasing offers lower payments and a new vehicle every few years. Run the Auto Loan Calculator and Auto Lease Calculator with the same vehicle assumptions. Read auto financing tips before visiting the dealer.

Manufacturer Incentives

Cash rebates and promotional APRs are usually mutually exclusive. The Cash Back or Low Interest Calculator compares total cost so you pick the better deal - not just the lower monthly payment.

How to compare a dealer worksheet

Ask for the out-the-door price: vehicle, tax, title, registration, and documented add-ons. Enter that total in the Auto Loan Calculator with your down payment, trade equity, rate, and term. Then run the same vehicle as a lease in the Auto Lease Calculator using MSRP, residual, money factor, and term from the lease worksheet. The lower monthly payment is not automatically the cheaper path; leases often have mileage caps and disposition fees that loans do not.

If the dealer offers either $2,000 cash back or 1.9% APR, do not guess. Put both offers into the cash-back vs low-interest tool with identical price, tax, and term. A short promotional APR can beat a rebate on a large principal; a rebate can win if you will pay the loan off early or if the standard APR after the promo is high. Read auto financing tips before you sit in the F&I office.

Pre-approval from a credit union or bank is a ceiling, not an obligation. Bring that payment to the dealer as a comparison, not as a number you must hit. Insurance, fuel, and maintenance sit outside these three calculators; add them in the Budget Calculator if the payment looks affordable in isolation but tight in a monthly plan.

Do not sign a blank rider for paint protection or VIN etching until those dollars are in the loan tool. A $2,400 add-on at 6.9% for 72 months is not a rounding error. Run it as extra principal and look at total interest before you initial the line.

How to pick an auto calculator

A retail installment contract with tax and trade-in belongs in the Auto Loan Calculator. A lease worksheet with residual and money factor belongs in the Auto Lease Calculator. A dealer choice between rebate and promo APR belongs in Cash Back or Low Interest. Do not drop a lease residual into a standard loan form; the payment math is different.

Each of the 3 auto pages names its inputs, shows a sample deal, and states what it skips (gap insurance, extended warranties, and lender markups). Numbers never leave the browser. For negotiation context, read auto loan financing tips.
